On July 9th, the European Commission introduced a new sanctions framework to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking. The measures would impose travel bans and asset freezes on offenders.
“We in Europe must be the ones to decide who comes to us and in what circumstances,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “We all have a common goal. To drive them out of business. And to save the lives of thousands of people who dream of a better life.”
The proposal requires unanimous approval from the European Council to take effect.
This announcement comes amid ongoing debates surrounding migration policy. Last month, the European Parliament approved a major overhaul to streamline deportations and permit offshore detention centers. The measure has drawn criticism from nations like France and Spain, with opponents arguing it is overly harsh and undermines asylum protections.
