As Independence Day approaches, America 250 events are in full swing across the US. While most of the celebrations will be taking place on and around July 4th, there are also plenty of states across America hosting year-long celebrations and offerings for travelers. In particular, there are ten stand-out events that travelers this year won’t want to miss.

10. The Florida Freedom Tour (Florida)

The state of Florida’s Semiquincentennial Commission is sending two repurposed 18-wheeler trucks across the state, bringing history directly to the people. Functioning as mobile museums, these vehicles will tour all 67 counties in Florida, featuring exhibits and artifacts curated by the Museum of Florida History.

The interactive exhibits will highlight Florida’s role in American history, allowing residents from rural towns to major metropolitan hubs to engage with artifacts they might not otherwise have the opportunity to see. This event will run from May 1st through August 1st.

9. Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 Tour

Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, has embarked on a coast-to-coast tour to celebrate the nation’s 250th. Featuring a 4th of July stop in Philadelphia, the massive engine is traveling across the East Coast for the very first time. The journey includes more than 50 whistle-stops across 10 different states and display days across 8 states. The train has already left for its journey, and will complete its tour on July 29th.

8. The Freedom 250 Civics Education Coalition (Nationwide)

Hosted in partnership with colleges, universities, and historical societies, these events are specifically designed to inspire citizens to reflect on America’s founding story and deepen their understanding of constitutional rights and liberties.

1. The Salute to America Celebration & Fireworks (Washington, D.C.)

America’s capital city serves as the epicenter for the 250th-anniversary celebration, with lots of other must-see events and celebrations occurring all around Washington, D.C.—many of which have been featured earlier in this list. This capstone event, The Salute to America Celebration & Fireworks, ties all of those previous events together, bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Washington Monument grounds and surrounding areas for a full day of programming in and over the skies of the National Mall.

As stated on the official website, “the capstone of America’s 250th anniversary brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Washington Monument grounds and surrounding areas for a full day of performances, flyovers, first time aerobatic demonstrations over DC, and a live broadcast evening program—culminating with the largest fireworks display in history.”
