Mexico Outperforms the US and Canada in 2025 Tourism Growth

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) newest Economic Impact Research (EIR) study, Mexico’s Travel & Tourism GDP grew by 1.8% in 2025, outperforming growth rates in Canada (1.2%) and the United States (0.9%). Although US sector growth moderated, the nation retains its status as the world’s largest Travel & Tourism economy.

Mexico outpaced its North American neighbors in 2025, recording a 3.5% increase in international visitor spending and a 6.1% growth in arrivals. In contrast, the United States suffered declines of 4.6% in spending and 5.5% in arrivals, while Canada saw respective drops of 3.5% and 0.6%.

This summer, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is projected by WTTC to act as a massive catalyst for North American tourism, driving massive GDP growth across all three countries. WTTC forecasts Travel & Tourism GDP growth of 2.4% in Mexico, 2.1% in the United States, and 6.4% in Canada this year due to the World Cup driving up tourism numbers.

Beyond immediate financial spikes, the WTTC views the global event as a strategic opportunity to secure long-term sector growth. Industry leaders emphasize that the tournament will drive closer cross-border cooperation, accelerate infrastructure development, and enhance overall international connectivity.

For Mexico specifically, these figures of regional expansion highlight a notable shift in North American travel. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, this momentum positions Mexico as a major competitive force against the legacy travel hubs.
