The Best Countries Ranking of 2026

U.S. News & World Report, one of the trusted leaders in country, college, grad school, and car rankings around the world, has released its 2026 rankings for the best countries in the world.

The Top Ten Countries of the World 2026 #1 Switzerland

How Countries are Scored

These annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report are regarded for their meticulous grading. Each country is ranked on a scale of 100 unique indicators that are related to national well-being. These indicators can be broken up into eight specified categories: infrastructure, economic development, health, civic health, governance, natural environment, opportunity, and culture and tourism. This system is meant to reveal the story of trade-offs within a country—like how a high infrastructure score naturally causes a low natural environment score—and rewards the countries that can strike the perfect balance in each of these areas while lowering scores for countries that lean too much into one or two areas.

The US Worldwide Ranking

According to U.S. News & World Report, the U.S. placed as the 18th best country in the world. This is an incredibly steep drop from its 3rd place crown in 2024. The U.S. was ranked 1st for the culture and tourism category and 2nd for economic development. However, it ranks low in the natural environment (No. 72), infrastructure (No. 39), and civic health (No. 41).
