According to Visual Capitalist, Europe recorded over 1.5 billion overnight stays in 2025, a massive leap from the mere 25 million reported by SmarterTravel in 1950. As global travel continues to surge in numbers, these figures are projected to increase. The World Travel & Tourism Council estimated that the European sector will grow nearly 3.2% globally in 2026.

Recently, Eurostat and the UK’s Office for National Statistics, through VisitBritain compiled some data to determine which areas of Europe are especially enjoyed by tourists. They ranked them in a Top 10 order based on how many international visitor nights were spent in each location.

10. The Netherlands: 64 million nights

More than a quarter of the country sits below sea level, so many tourists who visit here often go on canal cruises. The Netherlands is also home to the Rijksmuseum & Van Gogh Museum, two major cultural repositories with art pieces from Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Vincent van Gogh.

9. Germany: 83 million nights

Germany is known around the world for its tens of thousands of historic castles and its magical Christmas Markets during the four weeks of Advent (Weihnachtsmärkte). Tourists can go on scenic boat cruises passing medieval castles, visit stunning locales like Heidelberg Castle, or get immersed in Germany’s beer and club culture if that’s more their speed.

Croatia is world-renowned for its stunning Adriatic coastline, thousands of idyllic islands, and ancient walled cities like Dubrovnik. It is celebrated for its pristine national parks—such as Plitvice Lakes—and vibrant summer music festivals.

This country is known for its majestic alpine landscapes and rich classical music heritage. Here, tourists can visit plenty of palaces and castles, or if they want to explore Austria’s natural side, visit Europe’s tallest waterfall system the Krimml Waterfalls, descending 380 meters down a wooded alpine valley along a scenic hiking trail.

Greece is most known for its remarkably preserved ruins, mythology, crystal-clear beaches, and its many archaeological museums. Travelers who visit here like to go on guided food trails and culinary tours throughout major hubs like Madrid and San Sebastián.
