International Visitors are “America’s Greatest Ambassadors” in Recent Study

While US international travel is on the decline, the data shows that international travelers who do decide to visit enjoy their time in the country.

A new survey from the US Travel Association of 1,200+ recent international visitors to the US reveals that nearly 91% of them were satisfied with their trip. Meanwhile, 83% felt welcome in America, 56% said traveling to the US improved their perception of U.S. safety, and 61% left with a more favorable opinion toward the country as a whole.

This survey also covered the economic spending of these international visitors, and found that a striking 78% of them spent their money at small, independent businesses. In addition, interacting with these local establishments increased international visitor satisfaction and the sense of a welcoming experience. These results highlight the important role that local communities and small businesses play in shaping America’s international reputation and image.

This data comes at a time when international travelers in the US are at an all-time low. Even with lower international tourist rates, practically all the international tourists who visit the US leave satisfied with their trip. This is an important thing for the US, because good word-of-mouth from international travelers could help the country to start rising in the tourism ranks again.

Geoff Freeman, President and CEO of the US Travel Association, echoes this point.“We’re in a moment when confidence and perception are shaping traveler decisions. Travel is [America’s] greatest public diplomacy tool. Every international visitor who has a positive experience becomes America’s greatest ambassador.”
