American Airlines Suspends California Routes

American Airlines Suspending Flights to California Due to Rising Gas Prices

Last week, American Airlines announced that they will be cutting six routes in California that were scheduled for later this summer. The cuts will be on all three airports American serves in California: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Sacramento International Airport (SMF), and the Ontario International Airport (ONT).

These California routes are being suspended while airlines across the globe are forced to stomach higher fuel costs amid the ongoing Iran war, with the conflict causing international crude oil prices to nearly double in price per gallon.

In a statement from the airline issued to media and news outlets, “American has seasonally adjusted service on select routes in August and September as the airline refines its capacity growth for 2026.” American were very clear in that these suspensions are not permanent. “American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment and will continue to proudly offer an industry-leading network with more flights than any other U.S. airline.”

LAX will see the majority of these flight cuts, with four routes being temporarily suspended. The affected routes are:

Los Angeles (LAX) – Cleveland (CLE)
Los Angeles (LAX) – Columbus (CMH)
Los Angeles (LAX) – Pittsburgh (PIT)
Los Angeles (LAX) – Washington Dulles (IAD)

The Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and Ontario International Airport (ONT) will both only have one nonstop route affected, and for both airports, this will be the flight to the Charlotte Douglass International Airport (CLT), American’s hub airport.

All six of these daily, California, nonstop flights will be suspended from August 5 to October 5, when on that day, American Airlines expects to have all of these flights back on the schedule.

For travelers who have already booked these suspended flights, American Airlines said that they will be reaching out to affected passengers to offer refunds or alternate flights. Travelers who still wish to fly with American will still be able to reach all of these cut destinations. However, they will need a connecting flight with another airport if they wish to do so.
